Made from salvaged wood the sides of the box are sycamore, the base pitch pine and the feet mahogany. The lid is birch, with a parquetry inlay of mahogany, walnut and sycamore. Inside is a removable divided tray with pin cushion.

The initials P.C. on the lid are those of Peggy, the Land Girl for whom it was made as a Christmas present in 1948. Christoph, the German POW had been captured in Russia, sent to America then transported back to a POW camp in Tonbridge, Kent. Peggy, an office worker from Leyton, London had been recruited into the Women’s Land Army. From such different backgrounds they ended up living and working together at Stonewall Home Farm, Chiddingstone Hoath.

This box was included  in the History of the World project, 2010 as being of local and global significance.
